A very good relationship

Our first schoolvisit took place today. The touriststatus has depleted.

We were welcomed at Castle Brigde elementary in New York. After a short welcomingspeech, we first were taken to the auditorium, where the whole school came together to sing. This was so cool and beautiful to see! Teachers really were vulnerable whenever they made a mistake.
What really hit me was the respect that was so obvious througout the room. I could really feel it. After half an hour of community singing, the children went to work.

We were welcome in each and every classroom. Both teachers and students were willing to answer all our questions. My goals this week are to learn more about the way children are given ownership of their own curriculum and see how they choose what they want to learn, and how they want to do this.

I must say that I haven’t seen loads of new things. Things that really were an eye-opener for me. Most of the things I saw, made me realize I was doing the same kind of thing at work.
What I did see, was a very positive and remarkable relationship and respect. Children were so respectful to eachother and their teacher. You could really see the good and stable relationship between teacher and student. I came to realize this is one of the keyingrediënts to being able to let children work on their own terms on their own projects.
They will feel more confident about themselves when you, as a teacher, make them feel good and proud of themselves and confortable.

I know I already try to do that a lot. I am a teacher that really wants children to feel good and save in school. I do think it could be improved. Maybe I could invest more in the individual relationship whith my students, so they can reach their own goals, because they trust you, but more important, they trust themselves!

Tomorrow I’ll visit the Neighborhoodschool in New York. Hopefully I will recognize more of my goals  in the workfield.
